Manchester United's top 30 players of all time - Number 28

Old Trafford 3

Classy centre-back Martin Buchan makes it into the list of Manchester United's top players.

Manchester United have had some wonderful centre-backs down the years and Martin Buchan deserves a place on that list.

The Scottish international arrived at Old Trafford from Aberdeen in 1972, the year after making his international debut, and he would go on to become a United legend.

Buchan was a classy defender whose job was to keep them out at one end rather than score them at the other, with the player ending his time at United with only four goals.

He suffered the ignominy of relegation soon after arriving at the club but stayed and played a significant role in United’s promotion and subsequent success.

A club-record signing when he arrived at United for £125,000, Buchan was one of the classiest defenders ever to wear the shirt.

He ended his time at Old Trafford having made 458 appearances for the club, finishing his professional career with Oldham Athletic two years later.

Buchan helped United win the 1977 FA Cup and he would later play his part in runs to the final in 1979 and 1983, with the Red Devils winning the latter after a replay.
