Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has congratulated Belgian team-mate Romelu Lukaku after breaking an Everton goalscoring record on Tuesday night.

The former Chelsea striker netted in last night's 3-1 win at Aston Villa to break a record that had stood for over 20 years.

Lukaku scored the Toffees' third goal of the night to become the club's highest goalscorer in a single Premier League season, with that being his 17th of the league season.

In doing so, the 22-year-old eclipsed Tony Cottee and Andrei Kanchelskis's haul, and his compatriot has sent his congratulations.

The former West Brom loanee is also on course to register his most productive league season to date, having netted 17 times in a loan spell with the Baggies in the 2012-13 season.

The goal at Villa Park took him above Harry Kane and he is now second in the race for the golden boot, two behind Leicester hitman Jamie Vardy.

It has been quite a season for the big Belgian, who joined the Merseyside-based club for a record £28 million in the summer of 2014, and he certainly seems to be paying back that sizeable figure in the form of goals and lots of them.
