Everton boss Roberto Martinez shares what he always forgets about Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku scored his 17th goal of the season for Everton against Aston Villa yesterday.

Roberto Martinez has told ESPN that he keeps forgetting that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku is still only 22-years-old.

Lukaku has been handed a great amount of responsibility at Everton this season, and he has been required to lead the line on a regular basis.

The Belgian international has thrived in his role so far this term, and he has enjoyed his best season to date - scoring 17 times in the Premier League already.

Lukaku found the back of the net in Everton’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa yesterday evening, and Martinez believes that the youngster has a hugely exciting future ahead of him.

"Rom is still a very young man, we forget he's still only 22, but I think the way he's developed as an individual has been terrific and the responsibility he's developed this season,” Martinez said.

"The goalscoring has always been one of the biggest strengths for Rom but to see him growing in terms of what he does for the team is very pleasing.

"I felt his overall contribution was very good and I'm delighted for him to reach that level and I know from now until the end of the season he has that incredible focus to get that figure bigger as much as he can. But at 22 the world is clearly at his feet.”

Lukaku’s goalscoring record actually is more impressive than Lionel Messi’s was at the same age.

The powerful forward has now netted a staggering 116 club goals in his career, and he still has plenty of time to increase that total.

Lukaku has become one of the most feared front men in the Premier League, and he seems to have developed into the complete striker this term.

With Everton landing new investment, there is already talk that Lukaku could be handed an improved contract in the coming weeks (The Guardian), and that highlights his importance to the Merseyside club.
