Taking to his personal twitter account, Darren O’Dea has heaped praise on Virgil van Dijk of Southampton.
Van Dijk signed for Southampton in the summer, agreeing a move from Scottish champions Celtic. He had excelled whilst with the Bhoys, and it was clear that he needed to move away from Parkhead to continue his career at a higher level.
The 24-year-old has been very impressive in the Premier League so far.
He has played 24 games, scoring two goals in the process. He has established himself as one of the Saints’ first-choice centre-backs, and has proven versatile enough to feature in both a two-man and three-man defence.
He averages two tackles, 2.8 interceptions and 7.5 clearances per game, and has proven that he can be one of the most dominant defenders in the league on his day.
O’Dea, also formerly of Celtic, made his comment about Van Dijk during Southampton’s surprising 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Tuesday evening.
The Saints conceded twice, but Van Dijk was one of the few players to come out of the game with any praise aimed at him, following another strong performance.
The Dutchman won five aerial battles and three tackles, and completed a team high 10 clearances.
Southampton did extremely well to tempt Van Dijk down to the South Coast from Celtic over the summer, and he has so far shown that signing him was a fantastic move by the Saints.
