Former midfielder Darren Anderton says that Bournemouth defender Simon Francis is deserving of a place in the England squad.

Former Bournemouth midfielder Darren Anderton has taken to social media to suggest that Simon Francis deserves to be selected for the England squad.

After helping the club to promotion from the Championship, Francis has impressed in defence for the Cherries, and helped the South-Coast outfit record their second successive clean sheet against rivals Southampton on Tuesday night.

Steve Cook and Benik Afobe netted the goals as Bournemouth moved eight points clear of the relegation zone in the Premier League, but Anderton reserved special praise for the 31-year-old.

Despite already being in his thirties, Anderton, who played for Bournemouth between 2006 and 2008, has called on Roy Hodgson to give Francis an opportunity with the national team.

Francis signed for Bournemouth in 2012 and has played an instrumental part in the club's rise from League One to the top flight.

He has made 176 appearances in all competitions during that time, although none of his three goals have come in the Premier League.

England are next in action at the end of March when they play friendly games against Germany and the Netherlands.
