Alexis Sanchez has struggled to make an impact of late.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has put Alexis Sanchez’s run of poor performances down to a previous injury and feels the forward is fighting to regain his best form, the club’s official site report.

The Chilean international has struggled to make an impact since his return from injury, prompting a number of observers and pundits alike to criticise his performances of late.

Indeed, Wenger has recognised Arsenal’s Player of the Year hasn’t been at his best and told reporters that Sanchez is going the extra mile in order to regain his top form.

“He is just coming back from injury. I believe that he is fighting to come back to his best,” Wenger said.

“His second half was quite positive and encouraging at Manchester United. You don’t want him to lose confidence and he wants to fight.”

Sanchez’s latest performance in the 3-2 defeat at Manchester United prompted controversial figure Joey Barton to take to social networking site Twitter in order to question his impact on the big games.

Mesut Ozil used to be the subject of heavy criticism over the past two years, but his sublime form this season has seemingly seen Sanchez replace him as an easy target for the press.

But the biggest frustration is the likelihood of Arsenal again missing out on a Premier League title, and in a race containing Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur, that simply isn’t good enough.

Arsenal face Swansea City on Wednesday night and only victory will suffice for the North London club.
