Report details McClaren's two leading contenders to be named Newcastle captain

Newcastle are set to name a new captain with Fabricio Coloccini injured.

Steve McClaren is considering four options to captain Newcastle, the Shields Gazette reports.

Fabricio Coloccini is currently wearing the armband, but he is injured at the moment and could miss Wednesday’s game at Stoke City.

Should he fail a late fitness test, McClaren will have to assess other options to take the armband, and the report names four players in particular that the head coach is considering as captain material.

Jonjo Shelvey, a January signing from Swansea City, captained the Magpies during their La Manga break, is considered the prime contender for the captaincy. However, he is still only a new signing, and may not command the same sort of respect as some of his more established teammates.

Georginio Wijnaldum is also being considered, having captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season, earning his move to Newcastle.

He is a prime candidate to take the captaincy on a long term basis, and he has been Newcastle’s best player this year, but still is not the most vocal player on the pitch.

Local lads Jack Colback and Steven Taylor are also contenders, although their limited playing impact this season makes them less likely players to take the armband.
