Manchester United's top 30 players of all time - Number 30

We begin our countdown of the greatest players ever to feature for Manchester United with the inclusion of the brilliant Dutch goalkeeper.

When it comes to goalkeepers Manchester United have had some of the best in the business, but they have also had some of the worst.

Replacing club legend Peter Schmeichel was always going to be difficult and so it proved as Sir Alex Ferguson went through a number of options before finally getting the man he should have signed four years earlier.

In 2001, two years after Schmeichel left Old Trafford, Edwin Van der Sar moved from Juventus to Fulham, and after 127 impressive performances for the Cottagers the Dutchman completed a transfer to United and never looked back.

One of the greatest stoppers to ever grace the Premier League, Van der Sar helped United to four Premier League titles, two League Cups, three Community Shields, one Club World Cup and one Champions League triumph.

He left huge shoes to fill and David de Gea has done brilliantly in the intervening years, but the Dutchman made his own bit of history at Old Trafford.

Van der Sar retired in 2011 after making 186 appearances for United and winning 130 caps for the Netherlands.

A gentle giant with talent in abundance, it says something about United’s history that he only makes number 30 on this list.
