Jan Kirchhoff has told the Shields Gazette that there is still more to come from him at Sunderland.
The Black Cats signed Kirchhoff from Bayern Munich in the January transfer window, and he has immediately come into their starting line-up.
Kirchhoff has been handed a role as a defensive midfielder in Sunderland’s team, and he has provided great protection for the North East side’s defence.
The 25-year-old has also proven to be an excellent distributor, with the ball at his feet, but he admits that his fitness levels are an issue at the moment.
“There’s still more to come and make my game even better, even in terms of fitness, because there are times when I have to slow down because I’m not fit enough for the next action.”
Prior to moving to Sunderland, Kirchhoff had only played once for Bayern Munich this season - which rather explains his lack of match fitness.
The German is not the only one of Sunderland’s January additions to have made a good impact at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats also brought in Wahbi Khazri, Dame N’Doye and Lamine Kone last month - and all three have done well on their initial appearances for Sam Allardyce’s side.
However, despite an improvement, Sunderland still sit in 19th place in the Premier League table, and they will need to start winning more regularly if they are to move out of the drop zone.
