Two excellent young right-backs were on show at the weekend as Manchester United edged out Arsenal to record a 3-2 win at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford scored two key goals for United but Guillermo Varela was just as important to United's win, winning a key header in the lead up to United's second goal to knock the ball back into play.
Varela was signed from Penarol in 2013 but spent last year out on loan with Real Madrid, where he played in their academy under Zinedine Zidane.
Opposing right-back Hector Bellerin was bought by Arsenal several seasons ago from Barcelona's academy, and has progressed to become their first choice right-back.
Varela was only in due to the injury to former Torino defender Matteo Darmian, but he defended better than the Italian did against Alexis Sanchez when the two sides met at The Emirates early in the season.
He had a nervous start, booked after just eight minutes, but defended well, while Bellerin remained composed up against the trickery of Memphis Depay.
Varela completed a higher percentage of his passes than the Arsenal youngster, while also making more interceptions and matching the Gunners ace in terms of tackles won.
The Uruguayan has a long way to go before he earns the United spot as first choice, but the 22-year-old showed the Red Devils may yet have a player who can be their right-back of the future.
