Danny Rose has told the Hampstead and Highgate Newspaper that Erik Lamela looked at him with disgust when he asked the winger whether he felt Tottenham Hotspur could finish in the top four this season.
Rose went out for dinner with Lamela earlier this month, but the Argentine winger was unimpressed by the left-back’s left of ambition.
Lamela, it seems, has been convinced by his Spurs teammates’ quality this season, and he is certain that his side can win the Premier League title.
“I’d like to believe we can but I don’t want to think that… Before the Man City game I was having dinner with Lamela and I was still asking him if he reckoned we can finish in the top four,” Rose said.
“I’ve never seen someone look at me with such disgust. He said ‘My friend, we can win the league’.”
Tottenham have become the bookies’ outright favourites to win the Premier League title, after they beat Swansea City at the weekend.
Spurs came from behind to record an impressive victory over the Welsh side, and they have kept the pressure on Leicester City.
Tottenham are now just two points behind the Foxes, and they have put daylight between themselves and Arsenal, who are in third place.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side still have a lot of work to do if they are to lift the title in May, however, as they are heading into a season-defining week.
Tottenham take on West Ham United on Wednesday evening, before facing a crucial North London Derby against the Gunners at the weekend.
