Sunderland happy as they face West Ham United, says Jan Kirchhoff

The Black Cats beat Manchester United 2-1 last time out.

The mood in the Sunderland camp is a good one as they travel to West Ham United this weekend, defender Jan Kirchhoff has told the club’s official website.

The Black Cats have enjoyed a good couple of weeks of late, picking up a massive point against Liverpool at Anfield despite having been 2-0 down.

They then beat Manchester United to make it four points from six, when realistically they had been looking at potentially picking up none.

Those points have seen their hopes of avoiding relegation given a huge boost and Kirchhoff says they are really happy as a group as they travel to the capital.

“We are really happy right now, the last five opponents have been really strong but we have got a lot of points,” he told

“We deserved more against Manchester City but we played a good game and we have to stay in there, hold up our intensity and power in the training sessions to get a lot of points.”

“We are in a good way and we have to create a good feeling for West Ham because we have had a good week training so we’re going there to win the game and get three more points to get us up the table.”

The German defender will now be hoping he can continue the fine form he has enjoyed since joining the club in the summer.

He has been one of their standout performers in recent weeks, with him and fellow defender Lamine Kone helping to improve a leaky Sunderland defence.

They have the joint worst defensive record in the division this season, something that has been a big part in them finding themselves in another relegation fight.

If Kirchhoff can help to improve that further in the games remaining, it will surely be a big help to their hopes of escaping relegation.
