Liverpool and United are two of the biggest clubs in the world, and they should really be playing in the Champions League.
Instead, the Reds and Red Devils will face each other in what is widely accepted as the second tier of European club competition.
One suspects that both Liverpool and United will take the Europa League seriously, especially as winning the competition will see them qualify for the 2016-17 Champions League campaign.
Tottenham and Dortmund will also be aiming to win the Europa League, with the German giant one of the favourites for the competition.
While Spurs are in the running for the Premier League title this season, Dortmund are likely to second behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.
Describing Tottenham and Dortmund as footballing giants are not exactly accurate, but there can be no denial that at this moment in time, both clubs have better prospects and brighter futures than Liverpool and United.
