Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso admits being outplayed by Tottenham Hotspur

The Spaniard was one of the Fiorentina players taken apart by Spurs last night.

Tottenham Hotspur will face Borussia Dortmund in the next round of the Europa League, after dispatching of Italian opponents Fiorentina in the competition last night.

It was a comfortable 3-0 win at White Hart Lane from Spurs to book their place in the last 16 - leaving no doubt over who the superior team was.

The ease in which they ended up winning the tie was certainly unexpected considering the class of their opponents.

Now one former Premier League player in the Fiorentina ranks has commented on the result.

Defender Marcos Alonso has admitted, as reported by Forza Italian Football, that Spurs deserved to win the game - even if the scoreline was a little harsh:

“It was perhaps a bit harsh on us, but Tottenham played better and deserved to go through.

“It was hard for us, already in the first half we knew we had to take the lead.

“We weren’t cut down once they first scored tonight, but it all became complicated when they scored their second.”

The former Sunderland and Bolton Wanderers player was just one of many Fiorentina players who could not keep up with the fast pace of Tottenham's playing style at White Hart Lane - which swept their Italian opponents aside.

Spurs will know that they will have to take their already impressive performance levels up another notch if they are going to do the same to the German giants in the next round.
