Birmingham boss Gary Rowett hopeful of extending Jacques Maghoma's contract at St Andrew's

The winger's current deal with the Championship side expires in 2017.

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett has explained that he has already spoken to Jacques Maghoma about possibly extending his contract at St Andrew's, the Birmingham Mail reports.

The 28-year-old's current deal with the Midlands club runs until 2017, with an option for a further year (via Mail), and Rowett explained that he has been so impressed with what he has seen since he joined the club in the summer that he wants him to stay with them for longer.

"He's certainly one at the moment that we'd be looking to tie down onto a longer and more rewarding deal for him because his performances have deserved it," he told the Mail.

"It's something I've spoken to him about and I think it's something that all the players that we've always tried to do it if you look in the summer - players that have done well we'll always have a sit down and tell them where we see them."

The fact that Maghoma has already convinced his manager that he is deserving of a new deal is all the more impressive given that it took the former Sheffield Wednesday man a couple of months to earn a regular place in the starting line-up.

Only Clayton Donaldson and Jon Toral have scored more than Maghoma this season, who has four goals to his name, while he has also backed that up by contributing two assists.

And that form has helped the Blues maintain their position in the play-off race in the Championship. Rowett's men currently find themselves in the place directly below the top six, but have a tremendous opportunity to move into one of the coveted places as they boast a game in hand over the three teams above them, and are just three points adrift of Wednesday, who sit sixth.
