Aston Villa can look at Newcastle and West Ham for inspiration in the Championship.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Ashley Westwood has named the two clubs who Aston Villa can look at for inspiration if they are relegated to the Championship at the end of this season.

Westwood said: “Hopefully it will just be a blip and we can get straight back up and turn this club into what it should be. Just look at Newcastle and West Ham, it’s not all doom and gloom. Maybe it’s time to rebuild and give it another go.”

Villa are expected to be relegated this season, with few people believing they have enough to now stay in the top flight.

The Midlands club are eight points off safety, and with the form they are currently in, it is hard to imagine that Villa will be able to close that gap.

For a club of Villa’s size, they will believe they should win automatic promotion back to the Premier League, and if they keep ahold of much of their playing squad, Remi Garde will stay optimistic that a return can be secured at the earliest opportunity.

Villa being relegated will be similar to when Newcastle and West Ham went down, with the Magpies relegated in 2009 and the Hammers in 2011.

Both clubs won promotion back to the top flight the following season, with Newcastle storming to the Championship title, and West Ham getting up through the play-offs.

Villa have a squad of players who are surely good enough to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, and for a club of their size, they will be hoping to get back at the earliest opportunity.
