Aston Villa look doomed... and not just this season.
Has a Premier League side ever been backed for back-to-back relegations as much as this Aston Villa team?
Paul Merson (Sky Sports), Steve Sidwell (also Sky Sports) and Paul McGrath (Daily Mirror) have all recently tipped Villa for a trip to League One after their expected drop to the Championship this summer.
Now, Derby County and Mick McCarthy's Sunderland side were desperately poor Premier League teams - but were they ever this heavily talked of as a team who couldn't even hold their own in the second tier?
The worries are there for Aston Villa fans and that is the most incredible aspect of their expected relegation this time around: the fact there is so little hope of the side bouncing back next season.
It isn't even a case of bouncing back to the top flight - but rather bouncing back to a level that doesn't see them lose every week.
It's easy to see why that is, of course. Who within the club's hierarchy knows the first thing about player recruitment in the Championship (or Premier League)? And who within the club's first team looks like they actually care they are going down?
Supporters will obviously hope the nightmare scenario of consecutive drops won't happen. Sadly, though, few would bet against Villa plummeting the distance right now...
