Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has congratulated youth team boss Andy Welsh for the work he has done at under-21 level this season on social media site Twitter.
The Black Cats’ development side currently sit at the top U21’s Premier League table, having won 11 of their 16 matches.
And Allardyce has praised Welsh’s work with the club’s youngsters, after Sunderland beat Liverpool 2-0 on Monday.
Want to congratulate Andy Welsh & his Under 21s on a great season so far! Hoping they can go on to win the U21 PL title. #SAFC— Sam Allardyce (@OfficialBigSam) February 24, 2016
Sunderland dominated their match against Liverpool’s prospects from start to finish, and highlighted the quality they have coming through.
The Black Cats took the lead when Mikael Mandron struck, before Carl Lawson completed the triumph late on.
Allardyce has promised to offer some of Sunderland’s more exciting prospects first team chances, and his commitment to the future has already been proven.
The likes of Duncan Watmore and Jordan Pickford have been handed opportunities in the senior squad this season, and the pair have also been rewarded with long term contracts.
Sunderland’s under-21 side’s next match comes against Leicester City on Monday, and a victory in that match would help to consolidate their place at the top of the table.
