Remi Garde has given this response to Doug Ellis' claim that Aston Villa are doomed

The Villa boss admits that the club's former chairman is "probably" right but vowed never to give up the fight for survival.

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has admitted that Doug Ellis was "probably right" to say that the club are certainties for relegation but has sworn that he and his side will keep fighting until the bitter end, according to quotes published in the Birmingham Mail.

Former Villa chairman Ellis was initially in charge of the club from 1968 to 1975 and who retook control from 1982 after the Villans' European Cup victory until selling to current owner Randy Lerner in 2006.

He stated earlier this week that Garde's side had become "a certainty" for relegation and blamed the club's players for this season's plight.

Garde has reluctantly admitted that the 92-year-old is likely to be proven correct, but was defiant in insisting that his team have absolutely not accepted relegation.

The Frenchman responded, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail: "I'm here only for four months and it would be not right for me to have bad comments on that and probably he is right in his comments.

"The only thing is, until the last day we will have the possibility to be safe in this Premier League, I won't give up. And then my job is to still believe and make the players believe that if we have a good spell of games like we have had previously maybe we can still be in the Premier League next season.

"I'm still fighting and I have to accept the comments coming from this kind of people – no problem."

Villa are eight points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League table, and suffered their worst home defeat in 81 years with the 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool two weeks ago.

They have had plenty of time to reflect on that humiliation before returning to action, as they travel to the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke City this weekend.
