Liverpool legend Phil Thompson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ last Saturday afternoon (February 20, broadcast from 12pm) that he has been impressed with Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer.
Wimmer has recently got his chances at Tottenham due to the injury suffered by Jan Vertonghen.
Vertonghen is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, but the 23-year-old Austria international’s performances at centre-back have been just as good.
Former Liverpool defender Thompson has been impressed with Wimmer and has spoken highly of him.
“When Vertonghen got injured against Crystal Palace, I think we all thought this could be the demise because they have been rock solid, they played every minute of every game,” Thompson said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ last Saturday afternoon (February 20, broadcast from 12pm).
“We were thinking ‘Wimmer? Who is he? Yeah, he has got decent profile, decent stature, is he that good a player?’ He has been absolutely terrific, absolutely terrific.”
Wimmer has featured in four Premier League appearances for Tottenham so far this campaign. The former FC Koln defender has a pass accuracy of 91%, and has won four headers.
The youngster appears to be a younger version of Vertonghen, and he is showing his class and quality.
Tottenham are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 51 points from 26 matches, just two points behind leaders Leicester City.
