Liverpool fans may have watched their team lose to Manchester United in the International Champions Cup final, but that didn’t stop them being impressed with Raheem Sterling.
The jinking winger has been a revelation since the turn of the year, establishing himself as one of the best young prospects in world football and he further increased his reputation last night – despite the 3-1 defeat.
He won the penalty which Steven Gerrard scored from to give them the lead and looked a real menace to the United defence all night with his direct running and skilful close-control.
It means that Reds fans are hoping that he can take on the mantle and become their talisman this year, despite his tender years.
Sterling is still only 19-years-old, but plays with an intelligence that belies this fact and there is a genuine hope that he could step-up and be the man to cover the void that Luis Suarez leaves after departing for Barcelona.
Although he is unlikely to find the net as regularly as Suarez, his creativity from deeper positions will be pivotal in creating chances for Liverpool’s strikers this season and they will be relying on him to link up well with Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert if they are to retain their position in the top four.
The signs are encouraging that he will head into the season full of confidence and do just this, too, after his impressive competition was rounded off with a superb display against United last night.
Here are the best tweets from Liverpool fans on Sterling’s performance against the Red Devils.
Because it was Utd, the result takes on more, but we were the better side overall. The way Sterling and Coutinho tormented them was class.— Joseph Musker (@Musker_LFC) August 5, 2014

A lot of #LFC fans saying Sterling, Lallana and Sturridge are not "average". Not in general, but in comparison to Suarez, yes- they are.— TheMersonary (@TheMersonary) August 5, 2014
Yes #LFC have lost Saurez, but we've got a much better squad. Sterling looks ready to take over the creative mantle, too. Only 19. Scary.— Rory Slater (@RorySlater1) August 5, 2014

Lambert and Johnson have had shockers, but Coutinho was a monster before being subbed and Sterling was amazing as ever. Promising preseason!— Connor Conway (@senior_cone) August 5, 2014
