Joel Matip endured an awful night as Schalke lost to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League.

Schalke crashed out of the Europa League this evening after a thumping 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

The first leg ended in a 0-0 draw just a week ago, but Shakhtar coasted to victory as goals from Marlos, Facundo Ferreyra and Viktor Kovalenko sent Schalke out.

It was something of an embarrassing evening for Schalke, and particularly for centre back Joel Matip, who endured a torrid evening at the Veltins Arena.

The Cameroon international was at fault for former Newcastle loanee Ferreyra's goal, misjudging a long ball forward with a comical error, allowing Shakhtar in to score from close range.

That was Matip's final European game for Schalke, given that he is heading to Liverpool this summer, having penned a pre-contract agreement with the Reds earlier this month.

However, Liverpool fans won't be too happy considering that their defence is error-prone as it is, and Matip's performance sparked some concerns amongst Reds supporters.

Fans took to Twitter to admit their worries about Matip, suggesting that he is similar to current Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, whilst others figured that his poor performance came because he is already focusing on his Liverpool career before he has even arrived at Anfield.
