Villa look likely to be playing in the Championship from next season.
The way in which they have flopped to the bottom of the table has been very alarming and many a pundit and former player has commented on the club's chances of an immediate return to the Premier League. Many of them believe Villa will have no chance of returning to the top-flight next season, others can even see them going down to League One.
But Aston Villa fans can take solace in a team they relegated in 2008-09.
That season it was Newcastle United. They finished 18th in the Premier League and were not considered as immediate favourites to come back up the following season.
After a shocking pre-season defeat to Leyton Orient in July 2009, in which they lost 6-1, Newcastle were also being tipped to struggle in the second tier.
But the club was still Newcastle United. They lured the likes of Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson to the club and kept the likes of Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll.
The result? Newcastle romped to the Championship title. They finished top of the league on 102 points and were comfortable.
So whilst the current mood is downbeat at Villa, with it suggested they are set for a plummet, they should look at this Newcastle United team for inspiration.
