Funes Mori said: “Chelsea and Barcelona are rumours. When someone brings that up, it’s because you’re doing well. When I was at River, there was a rumour that Everton wanted me and it happened.”
The 24-year-old centre-back signed for the Toffees in the summer, agreeing a move from River Plate in his homeland of Argentina.
It was a move met with with doubt, rather than universal praise, with Funes Mori hardly excelling for River Plate, although he made his debut for the Argentina national team in early 2015 - and has gone on to win five caps.
He has played well this season for Everton, featuring 28 times for Roberto Martinez’s side, scoring two goals.
It has been hard to judge his real defensive talent, as he is playing in a team who have not performed well as a defensive unit this season, but Funes Mori certainly shows the kind of passion and never-say-die attitude that makes him a success.
The report claims that both Barcelona and Chelsea are tracking Funes Mori, and he has reacted to the news saying that interest from big clubs proves he is doing well for the Toffees.
He has not admitted he is open to any move yet, and there are as yet no indications that either Chelsea or Barca are ready to formalise their interest in the defender ahead of the summer transfer window.
