The Newcastle United striker can become a future great at St James' Park.
When Newcastle United signed Aleksandar Mitrovic from Anderlecht last summer much was made of his previous goal-scoring record.
After all, here was a young forward who had netted 44 times in 90 appearances for the Belgian club and who had previously scored 18 goals in 42 matches for Partizan Belgrade when he was just a teenager.
However, those Magpies fans hoping Mitrovic would hit the ground running were left disappointed and having taken time to settle in his new surroundings he has just five goals in 24 appearances to date.
That is not a terrible return, but it is not the kind of form Newcastle need from a striker tasked with firing them away from the relegation zone.
However whatever happens between now and May, next season is when Newcastle fans will really start seeing the best of Mitrovic on a consistent basis.
The young Serbian international is a complex character who was always going to take time to get used to the English game, but once he has done that he has all the attributes to take this country by storm.
Newcastle will be desperate not to lose their top flight status this season; however if they do drop into the Championship their young forward has the talent and the attitude to fire them straight back up, while if they avoid the drop he will have a year in the top flight behind him – a year that has no doubt taught him plenty.
In this case a little patience is required, because Newcastle may have signed their most prolific striker since Alan Shearer; he just needs time to realise that huge potential.
