Steve McClaren explains what he’s told players about relegation fight

The Magpies are currently 18th in the table with just 12 games remaining.

Steve McClaren has explained what he has told his players about their relegation fight this season, as reported by The Express.

The club are currently 18th in the table, level on points with Norwich City in 17th place above them and only one point clear of Sunderland in 19th.

Last time around saw them beaten 5-1 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in arguably one of their worst performances of a disappointing season so far.

McClaren though is insistent they can avoid the drop, and has told his players just that during a warm weather training trip to La Manga this week.

“We just talked about it," he told The Express.

"We have been delighted with the attitude and the kind of football we are playing at home.”

“The problem has been in away games and dealing with setbacks and making sure we go into games and score the first goal. So we have talked about maintaining our home form and improving away.”

There is no denying that away form has been the problem for the Magpies this season, having won just two games on the road throughout.

It is debatable whether they can improve that in the games remaining though given the away games they have remaining.

They are set to travel to Stoke City, Leicester City, Southampton and Liverpool in the coming weeks meaning away points could continue to be hard to come by.

Instead it seems they will have to keep relying on their home form, especially given they host all of their relegation rivals at St James’ Park in the last 12 games.
