The Scottish youth international has broken into the first team this season, with manager Dougie Freedman telling the Nottingham Post a year ago he has the ability to emulate his former Crystal Palace protege Wilfried Zaha.
Burke has now explained the reason for his absence, using Twitter to confirm he has picked up an injury.
Wishing the lads all the best. Unfortunately I have suffered a break in my hand. So annoyed but let's get the 3 points— Oliver Burke (@OliverBurke55) February 23, 2016
It is unclear how long the injury will keep Burke out for, with his time out dependent on the severity and nature of the break.
The 18-year-old midfielder has made 13 appearances in all competitions for Nottingham Forest this season, scoring two goals, both of which have been in the Championship.
Forest headed into the evening in 11th position in the table, having lost their last match at home to Huddersfield Town, a match which ended their unbeaten run, and was one in which Burke started.
