When asked which side will finish higher in the table, 747-game legend Southall said: “I’m hoping Everton but it will take some sort of spark from a midfielder to lead this team. If we can hit the form we’ve shown in glimpses, we can go unbeaten until the end of the season. Liverpool on the other hand are a team in transition and Jurgen Klopp is having to use someone else’s players, which is not easy when you’re trying to implement your own system of playing.”
Southall was non-committal on suggesting which team could finish higher, although he obviously admitted that he would like to see Everton above Liverpool.
The former goalkeeper has made a bold prediction about this current Everton squad though, suggesting that if they hit top form, they could go unbeaten until the end of the season.
This will be almost impossible, with the Toffees far too inconsistent to put a serious run of form together, but on their day they are one of the best teams in the entire division.
Liverpool sit three points above Everton, as well as being in the Europa League and the League Cup Final, and their season could end a successful one with silverware to their name.
However, regardless of their finish, Southall does not believe the pressure on Jurgen Klopp will be too much.
Klopp is working with a team made up of many players he does not want at Anfield, and no one will be able to judge the head coach correctly until next season, when he will have enjoyed the summer transfer window and a full pre-season to get his way across on Merseyside.
