Speaking to news.bwin, Neville Southall has claimed that Everton are lacking a player like Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who can take the game by the scruff of the neck when things are going badly.
Southall said: “If you look at the squad – and it’s a good squad – we’re missing one special player who doesn’t have to be a world-beater, but someone like Steven Gerrard who will come in and take a team by the scruff of the neck.”
Everton have one of the most promising squads in the entire Premier League, although their are some major weaknesses evident.
The young nature of the core players means that Everton have a tendency to collapse at times, and Roberto Martinez has still failed to address the poor goalkeeping situation and some weakness in the defence.
However, Southall believes the midfield is lacking in strength, claiming that there is no real leader in the squad who Martinez can call upon.
He does not have to be the most talented player, but he needs to be a leader in the middle of the park who can drag his teammates up a level if they are performing badly.
Southall names Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as the type of player that the Toffees could do with, although there are few players like that left in the modern game.
Someone like Ross Barkley could fulfil this role in the future, and if he can become more consistent over time, the young playmaker will develop into the type of player who can win a game all by himself.
