Could Southampton have won the Premier League this season?

Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert

If they still had some of their most recent stars could Saints have pulled it off.

This season's Premier League has been one of the most unpredictable in recent times. Leicester City top the table, Chelsea are loitering whilst Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City are all struggling for consistency.

So could Southampton have won the league this season?

The South-Coast club are currently in great form and the question really is, if they had kept their players, could they have won the league.

This is not going back to the Theo Walcott, Gareth Bale and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departures. However the more recent departures of Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers, Dejan Lovren and Morgan Schneiderlin.

With that high-calibre of player in their team from the start of this current season it would certainly be plausible that Southampton would have been Premier League title contenders.

What this goes to show is that Southampton should be more resilient in the transfer market. This season has proved that with the right team and the right manager anyone is capable of winning the Premier League.

Instead of selling, Southampton and teams around them should keep hold of their better players in the hope of battling for silverware.

Southampton easily could have this season - especially if they had also kept hold of Mauricio Pochettino, the manager currently guiding Spurs to a Premier League title battle.
