Indeed, the France coach has left a little bit of hope for the West Ham star as far as a call-up is concerned but spent more time recently discussing how hard it would be for the 28-year-old to get into the team.
On Payet, he said: "It was not enough. In the France team, he does not do the same thing (as he does) in his club.
"He is someone who is powerful in the club. He often plays on the left in a 4-3-3. He has some very interesting statistics on the left.
"But after that there is a competition issue. In this position on the left, the competition is from Anthony Martial, Antoine Griezmann, Mathieu Valbuena, Hatem Ben Arfa or Nabil Fekir before he got injured."
On Leicester's Kante, however, Deschamps is quoted as saying: "We are watching him obviously. He was already performing well at Caen."
That certainly is a long list of talent the French squad can boast. By highlighting just how many good players they have, Deschamps is increasing the pressure on himself...
On form, though, it's difficult to see why West Ham's Payet isn't in the squad at the very least.
But every manager has their favourites and Deschamps clearly feels Payet doesn't offer internationally what he does to the Hammers.
Leicester's Kante could have more hope and both have been very impressive this season.
