Speaking to talkSPORT, Ray Houghton has discussed Everton’s season, claiming that whilst the club may have underperformed, they can still finish high up the table with a good run until the end of the season.
Houghton said: “A lot of people say that Everton have underperformed in the league with the squad they have got, that they should be higher up the league than they are. But that’s not to suggest they can’t finish high, if they win a few games. They’ve been scoring a lot recently, so the forms been all right. They just need to put a consistent run together.”
The Toffees secured their place in the quarter finals of the FA Cup over the weekend, and were drawn against Chelsea in a competition they will believe they can win.
Having failed to reach the League Cup Final, Roberto Martinez will view the FA Cup as a chance of silverware for Everton, and many fans would say that the Toffees need to win the competition.
Winning the FA Cup would divert attention away from Everton’s poor league campaign, which has seen the Toffees struggle in mid-table for much of the season.
They currently sit in 11th place, with the most draws in the entire division, having wasted much of their attacking talent with a string of performances that show off some shocking defending.
However, Houghton is not writing the club off yet, claiming that they have the talent to put on a good run of form until the end of the season.
Should they manage to string a run of victories together, it would send the Toffees up the table, and their season may not end in such a mediocre manner.
