The West Ham playmaker has been compared to the former Tottenham man.
"I haven't seen better players than that. He is also doing the dirty work and on the ball he is up there with Luka Modric from the players I have trained so far."
That's by no means Bilic claiming Payet is better than Modric - but certainly suggesting he is on similar footing.
Indeed, the West Ham man is 'up there' on the ball with Tottenham Hotspur's best twenty-first-century midfielder.
Tottenham have had a few good midfielders down the years but none have been snapped up by Real Madrid (while Gareth Bale played further forward).
That makes it safe to assume Modric is Spurs' best since the turn of the century. He's clearly superior to Payet defensively - the two play different positions.
But they are both playmakers and Payet arguably edges things going forward. Both have a great shot and work hard in all areas of the game. With the ball at feet, though, is the Hammers' current star level with Modric?
West Ham and Tottenham fans - would it be fair to compare the two or does Payet still have a way to go?
