Pundit Paul Mariner has told ESPN that he thinks Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has to get his signings right this summer, including Joel Matip.
Cameroonian international centre back Matip agreed to join Liverpool last week, penning a pre-contract agreement with the club having starred with Schalke.
Matip, 24, has come up through the ranks with the Bundesliga giants having signed at the age of just eight, and has now racked up almost 250 appearances for the Gelsenkirchen outfit.
However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Liverpool have moved to secure Matip on a pre-contract agreement, meaning he will arrive at Anfield on a free transfer this summer.
Manager Jurgen Klopp took charge of Schalke's biggest rivals Borussia Dortmund during his time in Germany, and will be very familiar with what Matip can do either as a centre back or even as a defensive midfielder.
Now, pundit Paul Mariner has told ESPN that he thinks Klopp is under some pressure after signing Matip, as he has to get the deal right due to Liverpool's defensive problems.
Mariner also things that the way Matip gets tight to attackers could be a problem in the Premier League, something which Sunderland's Jermain Defoe exploited against Liverpool just weeks ago.
"I think, because of his history in the Bundesliga, he knows this player very, very well," said Mariner. "Obviously, he knows the player inside out [from Schalke v Dortmund]...he has got to get this right. This is probably the first piece of the puzzle to get this defence right. There's no secret that Liverpool are leaking goals, but this is going to be a player that he will start to build his defence around. I sincerely hope so, because it's a key, key move - Klopp has got to get these signings right."
"If you look at the way that he plays the game, he likes to get tight on attackers. In the Premier League, you've got to be clever, you're playing against some very, very good strikers; Kane, Costa, Aguero, those type of players, they like you to get tight. If you look at Defoe when he rolled Sakho, when Sunderland came back against Liverpool; centre forwards like that, so he's got to be careful, maybe he has to adjust."
"He's a very imposing character; 6ft 4in, he's decent in the air, he's got decent speed, covers the ground, can pass the ball. On the surface, from what we've seen, he looks as though this might be a nice fit. Klopp has got to get this right," he added.
Do you think Matip will be a success at Liverpool?
