Arsenal's Sanchez not Barcelona standard, Suarez better, claims Souness

Graeme Souness says there is a reason Barcelona allowed Alexis Sanchez to leave.

Graeme Souness has told the Sunday Times that there was a reason Barcelona allowed Alexis Sanchez to leave without much fuss.

The SkySports pundit believes Luis Suarez is a superior player, speaking ahead of this week's Champions League second round first leg clash between the two teams.

Souness believes the very high standards demanded by Barcelona made Sanchez expendable, while Suarez would not be.

He said: "Suarez superseded Alexis Sanchez at Barcelona and represents an upgrade on the Chilean. I do not believe that if you are the very best you leave Barcelona or Real Madrid — you are not allowed to for political reasons. If one of the big Spanish clubs sells Suarez or Ronaldo, it could cost the president his role."

He also went onto add that he does not fancy the Gunners to progress in the competition, commenting: "Do Arsenal have a chance? An extremely slim one."

Sanchez signed for Barcelona from Udinese in 2011 and left the La Liga giants after the 2014 World Cup to move to Arsenal, while the La Liga giants bought Luis Suarez from Liverpool for a higher fee.

Arsenal had attempted to sign Suarez a year earlier, but Souness believes the Gunners' attempts were always doomed to failure, stating: "I do not believe there was any chance he would have ended up at Arsenal because I reckon the lines of communication with Barcelona were already open. There is no way they will have made their mind up one week, then bought him the next."

Sanchez scored 47 goals in 141 games for Barcelona, while Suarez has a vastly superior strike rate, already outscoring the Chilean by netting 66 goals in 80 appearances to date.

The Gunners star meanwhile is happy he made the move, winning an FA Cup medal in his first season at the club, and telling SkySports he has 'no regrets' over the transfer.
