Newcastle United beat Lillestrom 2-1 in a friendly match yesterday.
Riviere is yet to play a competitive match all season, with injury problems curtailing his progress at St. James’ Park, but he is close to making a comeback now.
And McClaren has praised the performance that the French striker put in during Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Lillestrom on Saturday.
“It was good to get minutes for Jamaal and Steven Taylor along with Seydou and Henri. Plus Manu Riviere came back from injury and was terrific. Rolando also benefited.”
Newcastle won against their Norwegian opponents thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Rolando Aarons.
The Magpies are currently in La Manga on warm weather training, with the North East based side looking to iron out any faults in their game.
Newcastle’s next competitive match comes on March 2 against Stoke City.
Riviere could be involved in that fixture, and he will be hoping to have a more productive second campaign in England.
The former Monaco man scored only one Premier League goal last season in 24 appearances, but Newcastle need him to find form quickly.
McClaren’s side have lacked a prolific striker all season and that is part of the reason why they are stuck down in 18th place in the top flight standings.
