Shocked Paul Merson says Newcastle have made the worst decision possible

The pundit is not a fan of Newcastle's La Manga trip.

Paul Merson has expressed his shock at Newcastle United's decision to send their team on a warm-weather training camp to La Manga, according to the Chronicle.

Indeed, Merson thinks the Spain trip is the worst move Newcastle could possibly have made at this moment in time.

The pundit takes particular issue with the fact Steve McClaren's men jetted off soon after getting thrashed 5-1 by Chelsea.

And Merson told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Chronicle: "When we reeled off where all the teams were I looked at (Phil Thompson) and said: ‘What, Newcastle have gone away?’ I was at Arsenal when we were supposed to be going away and it got cancelled. George (Graham) in his wildest dreams wouldn’t send us away if we’d have been beaten 5-1 away from home.

"That was the worst move they could possibly have made."

Upon their return, the Magpies face two crucial Premier League clashes. First off, Newcastle travel to Stoke City. Their away form has been woeful this season and it looks doubtful that will improve at the Britannia Stadium.

Following that, however, Newcastle will harbour hopes of winning a relegation six-pointer against Bournemouth.

At home, Newcastle have fared better - most recently beating West Brom 1-0 at St James' Park.

Whether the La Manga trip does anything for McClaren's men and their season, though, remains to be seen.
