According to The Chronicle, Sunderland are plotting a summer move to sign Bordeaux midfielder Clement Chantome, offering him a reunion with Wahbi Khazri.
The Black Cats added a host of new faces in January by signing goalkeeper Steve Harper, defenders Lamine Kone and Jan Kirchhoff, midfielder Khazri and striker Dame N'Doye.
So far, the results have been positive as Sunderland now sit just one point off Premier League safety having beaten Manchester United 2-1 last weekend.
Manager Sam Allardyce may well be confident of beating the drop, and appears to have targets in mind if Sunderland remain a Premier League club for next season.
The Chronicle report that midfielder Clement Chantome is a target, with the Bordeaux midfielder potentially being offered a reunion with playmaker Khazri.
Chantome, 28, spent 15 years of his career with Paris Saint-Germain, before leaving the capital for Bordeaux in January 2015 as he looked to play first-team football again.
Known as a box-to-box midfielder, the Frenchman has impressed with Bordeaux, but is out of contract at the end of the season and could move on a free transfer this summer.
The Chronicle suggest that Sunderland sent scouts to Bordeaux's home game against Nice on Friday ahead of a possible bargain move for Chantome, given that they wouldn't have to pay a penny for an experienced midfielder - though much may still depend on the long-term future of loanee Yann M'Vila.
