Rumours have grown this weekend of the Newcastle midfielder being appointed skipper.
Indeed, regular skipper Fabricio Coloccini wasn't playing in La Manga, which meant it could have just been a one off for the 23-year-old midfielder.
But many are now suggesting on social media that boss Steve McClaren will replace Coloccini with Shelvey on a permanent basis.
It would be totally out of character from the Newcastle head coach, of course. Making big decisions and standing up to a struggling player just aren't something McClaren has ever done or even shown interest in doing.
However, should he finally reprimand Coloccini for his woeful form this season, Newcastle fans would surely welcome the move. And they've done just that on Twitter in response to the Shelvey - captaincy rumours.
Despite the odd reservation here or there, the Magpies faithful would welcome the 23-year-old as their new skipper, it seems...
Would love to see McLaren strip Collo of captaincy and put Shelvey in #NUFC— @Bristol_NUFC (@Bristol_NUFC) February 21, 2016
Hope the Shelvey to become captain rumours are true. Hasn't been here long but already comes across as being vocal and respected. #NUFC— Jamie Pyle (@J90Pyl) February 21, 2016
Hopefully this talk of Shelvey being new Captain means Colo will be dropped for remaining games #nufc coz he's finished!— Chris Currie (@Wig82) February 20, 2016
