Should Jack Colback be playing at left-back for Newcastle United?

Chelsea Penalty v Newcastle

The former Sunderland player has played at the back in the past?

Newcastle United have had a serious issue in recent weeks regarding who to play at left-back. Injuries to Massadio Haidara, Kevin Mbabu and Paul Dummett saw Steve McClaren play young winger Rolando Aarons in the position, which turned out to be nothing short of a disaster.

But has Newcastle's left-back option been staring at them the entire time?

Central midfielder Jack Colback played a large part of his career at Sunderland in the role and performed well there under difficult circumstances.

The 'Ginger Pirlo' of course prefers playing in the heart of midfield but is perfectly adept in the left-back role. He himself has suffered with injury problems this season but is now back in first-team action.

Dummett is back fit, but there is certainly an argument that in fact Colback remains a better option at left-back than the Welshman.

Newcastle do not play again until March, as their next fixture was due to be against Manchester City, who are in the League Cup final.

So the Newcastle boss has some time to decide over the future of the left-back position.

But Colback is a great option and, perhaps, their best.
