Borussia Dortmund have responded angrily to claims that midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will join Pep Guardiola at Manchester City this summer.
Gundogan, 25, has been one of the finest midfielders in Europe ever since joining Dortmund from Nurnberg back in 2011, and he has recovered well from missing virtually the entire 2013-14 season.
The German international has earned praise for his exceptional passing range and technique in possession, and he thrived under now-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp at Signal Iduna Park, winning one Bundesliga title and even scoring in the 2013 Champions League final.
However, just like Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski before him, speculation surrounds a possible departure from Dortmund, with some of Europe's biggest clubs allegedly looking to sign him.
Spanish newspaper Sport reported on Friday that Gundogan has told Barcelona that he isn't joining them this summer, as he has already verbally agreed to sign for Manchester City and their manager-in-waiting Pep Guardiola - who will no doubt know about Gundogan's ability having managed against him as Bayern Munich boss.
Yet, City fans barely had time to get excited about the deal before Dortmund took to Twitter to give their unequivocal response to the report.
.@sport Really? We should know about that, shouldn't we? Truth is, we don't know anything about that.— Borussia Dortmund (@BVB) February 19, 2016
For now, it seems like you can pump the brakes on Gundogan signing for City, though it would be little surprise to see him at the top of Guardiola's transfer wish list this summer.
Would Gundogan be a good signing for City?
