Arsene Wenger on why Ozil and Ramsey were dropped for Hull City draw

The two missed out Saturday's 0-0 draw in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger has explained why he dropped key duo Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey for the FA Cup clash with Hull City, via the club’s official website.

The Gunners drew 0-0 with Steve Bruce’s side on Saturday afternoon, as the Tigers earned themselves a replay at the KC Stadium.

Wenger opted to go with a much changed team for the fifth round clash, handing game time to several lesser used members of his squad and dropping some of his key stars.

Among those was midfield duo Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey, and now he has explained why those two were left out of the game.

“I played a team that, in my opinion, had the quality to win the game today. The Barcelona game was not in my mind today,” he told

“I rested Ramsey and Ozil completely, because they’ve played many games since the start of the season. When I can do it, I do it.”

“Mesut Ozil was a bit sick over the week, so I decided to leave him out completely. Ramsey has played many games, so that’s why I kept him out.”

Wenger is now likely wishing he had named some more of his first team stars given how the game panned out.

The draw was not an ideal result for his side, with them now having to fit the replay into an already packed fixture schedule that includes the Champions League clashes with Barcelona.

That competition, as well as the Premier League, is arguably more important to the Gunners, and it would not be a surprise to see Wenger sacrifice the FA Cup when that replay is finally arranged.
