Championship trio all made unsuccessful enquiries for Swansea winger

Middlesbrough, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday all attempted to sign Jefferson Montero on loan.

Swansea City have turned down a number of approaches for out-of-favour winger Jefferson Montero, HITC Sport understands.

The 26-year-old has started just two league games in the last four months and has barely featured in the first-team squad under new Italian boss Francesco Guidolin.

With Montero struggling to make an impact, Championship promotion contenders Middlesbrough, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday all expressed an interest in taking the South American.

However, Swansea have told Montero and the interested parties that he will not be allowed to leave this season as the club battle to save their Premier League status.

The fact that Montero is even linked to the Championship is a real drop from grace for the player, who started the season in spectacular fashion and in August was even been linked with Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

Now he has been told to battle for his place in the Swansea squad by the club's hierarchy.
