David Ginola suggested on The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (February 19) that Tottenham Hotspur should take the Europa League seriously.
The former Tottenham attacker outlined the reasons why the North London outfit should not see the European competition as a hindrance to their ambition of winning the Premier League title this season.
“I think as a manager you have to think twice, but for Tottenham this season is about winning something obviously,” said Ginola. “I don’t think you need to drop the Europa League.
“I mean, it’s always nice to play European games because for players it adds experience and you bring it back to the Premier League. It’s always nice. It’s not so many games to play in the Europa League anyway.”
Ginola’s comments will probably come as a surprise to some, as the Europa League is often seen as a hindrance.
Tottenham have a real chance of winning the Premier League title this season, but playing in Europe is viewed by many as something that they could do without.
However, what Ginola says about the Europa League makes sense and is quite encouraging.
Spurs have a squad big enough to cope with two games a week. Moreover, the Europa League represents a chance of direct qualification to the 2016-17 Champions League.
Now that the Europa League is in its knockout stages, Spurs will get to play against quality teams, like Fiorentina on Thursday evening.
