The former Villa player believes the current crop of players will struggle in the Championship.
The Reds smashed home six goals in a confident 6-0 romp as Villa toiled to defeat yet again.
This was perhaps the most abject of performances from Villa so far this season and after the game nobody seemed to think that the club had any chance to survive.
Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher went as far as to say they would struggle in the Championship and that the team is the worst he has ever seen in the Premier League - as reported by the Daily Mail.
Paul Merson, a former Aston Villa player, agrees.
He told Sky Sports News today that Villa would be mid-table in the Championship at the moment:
"The least you can ask for in a football team is effort.
"It's unbelievable what Jamie Carragher said, how true it was. Sometimes you watch teams get relegated and you go 'he'll get a club, someone will definitely buy him.'
"This team won't be far off going down again. That's how poor they are.
"100 per cent that team would be mid-table in the Championship."
This summer will certainly be interesting for Villa. A major upheaval is expected from the club and that may see plenty of the summer signings that have flopped this term depart the club.
Right now Villa are in need of a miracle to not flop again in the Football League next term. Hopefully a solid summer of rebuilding will help them in their cause.
