Martin Keown says Tottenham should use Carroll and Mason in Europe; hails Pochettino as a winner

Tottenham Hotspur continue their impressive campaign when they return to European competition this week.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has discussed Tottenham Hotspur’s continuing participation in three competitions in his latest column for the Daily Mail.

Tottenham are currently second in the Premier League table, just two points behind leaders Leicester City, while they are also in the FA Cup fifth round and the Europa League last 32.

They return to that competition this evening when they take on Fiorentina in Italy, and when asked if Tottenham should throw in the towel to focus on domestic matters Keown suggested not.

“If you’re a winner, which (Mauricio) Pochettino is, you show faith in your players and your squad that they can cope and win every game,” Keown wrote. “He has to tell his team to carry on as usual.”

Tottenham are blessed with an impressive squad depth these days – although Jan Vertonghen’s injury and Federico Fazio’s January exit has left them short in defence.

That said Keown feels that summer signing Kevin Wimmer needs more games despite recently replacing the Belgian international in Pochettino’s starting XI, while he has tipped two underused Tottenham midfielders to get more time in Europe.

“In midfield there are people like Tom Carroll and Ryan Mason who don’t get enough minutes and can be used in the Europa League and Eric Lamela and Nacer Chadli can player,” the former Arsenal star added.

Whatever happens between now and May, Tottenham have had a wonderful campaign, but can they top it off with some silverware? We will soon find out.
