Jurgen Klopp's return to Germany with Liverpool turned out to be a forgettable match, a 0-0 draw against Bundesliga also rans Augsburg.
The team lacked imagination, even with Daniel Sturridge starting up front and Brazilian attacker Roberto Firmino also getting the chance to shine on a return to the country he left last summer.
Among those to look listless in terms of creativity was captain Jordan Henderson, who appears to have regressed over the past year.
12 months ago he was Liverpool's stand out player, his form overshadowing Steven Gerrard, and even leading to being named as a FIFA 16 cover star and being awarded the club captaincy.
This season he has not looked nearly as dynamic, and was part of an ineffective midfield trio last night alongside James Milner and Emre Can.
He was effectively tidy against Augsburg, completing 93 per cent of his passes, and had three attempts on goal, but only one was on target.
Injuries have prevented him from getting enough game time to add to his tally of just two goals for the season, but in a year where he would really have wanted to be kicking on and improving, Henderson has not been able to do that so far, and faces a big last two to three months of the season if he is to convince Jurgen Klopp he deserves to be the club captain next season.
Here is a look at how fans reacted on Twitter to his display...
Not a great game but not a bad result. Coutinho was fabulous. Henderson was our best midfielder, some #lfc fans criticize him for nothing.— Noam Mybürgh (@NoamLFC) February 18, 2016
Sorry but Henderson as captain just isn't working !! Some players need to realise who they're playing for #LFC— Tom bateman (@TomBate04) February 18, 2016
Gonna say it now and it breaks my heart to say it but I think it's time #lfc off loaded Jordan Henderson— TheMoanyOne (@TheMoanyOne) February 18, 2016
