Steve McClaren needs to drop Fabricio Coloccini as soon as possible.
Fabricio Coloccini signed a new contract before the start of the season, and Steve McClaren confirmed he would remain as captain of Newcastle United.
This seemed a wise decision at the time, as Coloccini proved his with time and again for the Magpies, even if he is no longer the player he once was.
He brought experience to a much-changed Newcastle side, and would be the older figure in a relatively young defence.
However, the decision has proven to be a huge mistake, with the captaincy making Coloccini undroppable, despite a run of horrific performances.
Admittedly, there is a lack of depth in the defensive ranks, meaning it would be hard to drop Coloccini for a better player, but there is one action that McClaren could take to kick the veteran centre-back into shape.
McClaren should take the captaincy off Coloccini, to show him that he is not untouchable, with a much better option to lead the side already in the squad.
Georginio Wijnaldum has been one of the few bright spots of Newcastle’s season, and he is an experience skipper in his own right. He captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season, and whilst not the most vocal presence, it is hard to deny he is a perfect professional.
He is the kind of player who you want an entire team emulating, and has done more than enough this season to deserve the armband.
Coloccini is on his last legs at St James’ Park, and losing the captaincy should be the first step towards him leaving Newcastle this summer.
