The defender dominated two key defensive stats in the Premier League's weekend games.
The centre back has looked a superb signing since joining from Celtic in the summer, with a number of imposing displays at the heart of the Saints defence.
Recent weeks have arguably seen him and his side at their best though, with the return of Fraser Forster helping them keep six clean sheets in a row and surge up the table.
The 1-0 win over Swansea was the latest of those and it transpires that Van Dijk was particularly impressive once again.
|Team||Match||Effective Clearance||Mins Played|
|Virgil van Dijk||Southampton||Swansea vs Southampton||17||90|
|Jonas Olsson||West Brom||Everton vs West Brom||11||90|
|Federico Fernández||Swansea||Swansea vs Southampton||10||90|
As the table provided by Opta shows, he managed to dominate two key defensive statistics in the Premier League over the weekend.
The first of those was effective clearances, as he posted 17 in the clash with the Swans, more than any other player across the weekend’s fixture.
It was domination as well, as the Dutchman registered six more than his closest rival, West Brom’s Jonas Olsson and seven more than Federico Fernandez of Swansea.
|Team||Match||Effective Head Clearance||Mins Played|
|Virgil van Dijk||Southampton||Swansea vs Southampton||12||90|
|Jonas Olsson||West Brom||Everton vs West Brom||6||90|
|Federico Fernández||Swansea||Swansea vs Southampton||9||90|
He enjoyed a similar ascendency when it came to effective headed clearances as well, posting 12 in the game, three more than Fernandez and five more than West Ham United’s James Collins.
An impressive all round display from Van Dijk then, who will be hoping to help his side rack up more clean sheets as they eye a place in the top six come the end of the campaign.
