Former Leicester City midfielder Robbie Savage said on the BBC Radio 5 live 606 show on Saturday evening (February 13) that Mark Noble is a better midfielder than Jonjo Shelvey.
Savage suggested that the West Ham United midfielder should be ahead of the Newcastle United January signing in the England pecking order.
“Name me players, midfield players, who have played for England in the last four or five years,” said the former Wales international. “(Ryan) Mason, he can’t hold a regular place in the Spurs team.
"I think he (Noble) is better than Shelvey. I think he is more consistent than Jonjo Shelvey, but Shelvey has played for England. I think he is more consistent than Ryan Mason.”
Noble has been at West Ham his entire professional career so far and is a consistent figure. The 28-year-old is not a ‘great’ player, but he is reliable and gets the job done.
Over the years, England have had some very good midfielders, such as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, and perhaps that is why Noble has not been able to break into the Three Lions’ set-up.
As for Shelvey, he is a good midfielder, but he has not been able to play to his level this season.
The 23-year-old England international scored one goal and created 23 chances in 16 Premier League appearances for Swansea City before switching to Newcastle in the January transfer window. The former Liverpool man has created nine chances in five league matches for the Magpies.
Noble has scored three goals and created 33 chances in 25 Premier League games for West Ham so far this campaign.
